Reef Friendly
Did you know that since January 2021 sunscreens with the UV filters Octinoxate and Oxybenzone have been banned under the Hawaiian Reef Act in Hawaii? Because these synthetic UV filters are suspected of not only triggering allergic reactions in humans, they could also damage coral reefs. Hawaii decided in 2018 that the UV filters Octinoxate and Oxybenzone will no longer have any place on the picturesque beaches of the archipelago from 01.01.2021.
Sunscreen in the sea?
According to the International Coral Reef Initiative (Icri), around 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in the oceans worldwide every year. The effects are therefore particularly noticeable on much-visited beaches. But anyone who thinks that the danger only lurks overseas is mistaken.
The two suspicious UV filters were also found in measurements in the Baltic Sea in 2015 (DOI: 10.1016 / j.marpolbul.2017.07.057). In order to avoid the pollution of the oceans by the two synthetic UV filters, you can switch to products with mineral UV filters, preferably based on nature.
