Hand Massage
Learn the most important points step-by-step
Are you still looking for the right mindfulness technique for you? Then we might have an effective solution for you! Read on to discover how a simple hand massage can benefit you.
Happy through touch
Anyone who has treated themselves to a relaxing spa massage knows that touch has a relaxing effect. But did you know that gentle touches on our hands are particularly relaxing?
Several thousand receptors are stimulated by flowing movements. During a soothing hand massage, happiness hormones (serotonin and endorphins) and the relaxation hormone oxytocin are released and send your senses on a short holiday. Perfect for a mindfulness routine!
Preparing a hand massage
Being prepared means you will be able to relax more easily! This way, you can fully concentrate on the task.
First, you should think about where you want to perform your hand massage: you can transform your favourite spot in on the couch or bed into a relaxing massage location.
Next, you will need either pillows or blankets that can be used as armrests, as well a large bath or sauna towel to lay down so that the oils or creams don’t stain surfaces. If desired, you could play music and light candles. Your hands should be freshly washed before you start the massage.
A hand bath
Pamper yourself and your hands with a soothing hand bath! Your hands and your soul will be perfectly prepared for the following hand massage:
The warm water with the nourishing additives makes your skin soft and supple and loosens your hand muscles. This will make the stroking massage movements feel even more pleasant on your skin.
How to run a hand bath
Fill a bowl with warm water, add a few drops of rich vegetable or bath oil and immerse your hands in the water for 5 minutes. Enjoy the time and feel how your hands become soft and supple. Massage your cuticles in gentle, circular movements.
Learn hand massage
After the hand bath, your hands are now ready for the massage. Now it’s time to grab hand cream or oil, get set and start applying cream!
Step 1: Apply cream
Apply a hazelnut-sized amount of hand cream or some oil to your hand.
Step 2: Spread your hand
Hold the hand you want to massage first and stroke it from the fingertips to the wrist, applying light pressure. Repeat this stroke twice on both sides, so that both the back of the hand and the palm are massaged.
Step 3: Massage your fingers
Massage each finger with your thumb in circular movements from the fingertip to the base of the finger, gently grasping the respective finger with the rest of your hand. Work your way from the thumb to the wrist.
Step 4: Stretch your fingers
Place the hand that is to be massaged loosely on a surface. With the working hand, grasp one finger after the other and stroke it from the base joint to the fingertip. You can also rotate the fingers slightly and cross two fingers at a time until you feel a slight pulling sensation.
Step 5: Massage the back of your hand
Grasp the joint spaces on the back of your hand. To do this, first knead the joint gently with both thumbs. Then smooth the spaces upwards. Repeat this step two more times.
Step 6: Massage the palms of your hands
Grasp the back of your hand and massage the palm with the thumb of your working hand for about a minute. Make circular movements or pressure point stimulation by gently pressing the palm of your hand with your thumb for a few seconds.
Step 7: Add hand cream or oil again
The crowning touch: gently stroke your hand again as in step 1.
Step 8: Use a towel
If your hands are still too “slippery” from the hand oil or hand cream, you can rub them in a small towel to remove the excess residue from your hands.
